**I got a Form 1099-K. What does it report, and why doesn't it match my revenue?** What a card processor or payment app reports on Form 1099-K, the 2026 thresholds, why box 1a is gross, and how Northwind ties its form to the books.

[Form 1099-K](https://lopifi.com/md/glossary/form-1099-k) is the information return a card processor, payment app or online marketplace files with the IRS to report the gross payments it settled to you in a calendar year. You don't file it; you receive it, by January 31, and the IRS gets a copy. The point of this lesson is that its number won't match your revenue, and that's fine as long as you can show why.

## Who sends one, and above what

| Paid through | Reported when | Authority |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A card processor (customers pay by credit, debit or gift card) | Any amount, any number of payments | IRS, Understanding your Form 1099-K |
| A payment app or online marketplace (third party network) | Over $20,000 and over 200 transactions | Instructions for Form 1099-K (12/2026) |

The thresholds for calendar year 2026, as the IRS states them.

> “If your customers or clients pay you directly by credit, debit or gift card, you'll get a Form 1099-K from your payment card processor no matter how many payments you got or how much they were for.”

— [IRS — Understanding your Form 1099-K](https://www.irs.gov/businesses/understanding-your-form-1099-k), Card payments are reported at any amount

> “A third party settlement organization (TPSO) is required to report payments in settlement of third party network transactions with any participating payee that exceed $20,000, and the total number of such transactions exceeds 200.”

— [Instructions for Form 1099-K (Rev. December 2026), What’s New](https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1099k), Payment apps and marketplaces report above $20,000 and 200 transactions

> **The threshold changed, then changed back.** The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 had lowered the payment-app threshold. The One, Big, Beautiful Bill retroactively reinstated the test in effect before it: over $20,000 and over 200 transactions. A platform may still send a form below it, and an older article quoting a lower figure is out of date.

## Box 1a is gross

The amount in box 1a is every reportable payment at its full amount, before the processor's fees, before refunds, before anything else comes off. It's what customers paid, not what reached your bank and not your revenue.

> ““Gross amount” means the total dollar amount of total reportable payment transactions for each participating payee without regard to any adjustments for credits, cash equivalents, discount amounts, fees, refunded amounts, shipping amounts, or any other amounts.”

— [Instructions for Form 1099-K (Rev. December 2026), Box 1a](https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1099k), Box 1a is gross: not reduced by fees, refunds or credits

**Northwind — Tying the 2026 form to the books.** Alder's $4,000 card payment in November is Northwind's only card receipt of 2026. Because it's a card payment, the processor reports it however small: box 1a will read $4,000. The bank received $3,883.70, and the $116.30 difference is the fee Northwind already booked as an expense. The revenue isn't on the form at all: it was recognized when INV-1008 was issued, in the same month by coincidence.

Gross in, fee off, payout out: what box 1a reports ($4,000) against what the bank received ($3,883.70).

1. **Get the gross.** Pull the processor's report for the calendar year, gross charges by month.
2. **Walk gross to deposits.** Gross less refunds, chargebacks and fees should equal the payouts in your bank account.
3. **Walk gross to revenue.** Card receipts that paid invoices are AR collections; receipts with no invoice are sales. Either way revenue was booked from the books, not from the form.
4. **Correct a wrong form at the source.** If the form is wrong, ask the filer named on it for a corrected form. The IRS can't correct it. Don't hold the return waiting.
5. **File the walk with the return.** Keep the reconciliation with the return. An IRS letter about a 1099-K mismatch is answered with it.

When the form arrives.

Two more things. A processor that doesn't have your taxpayer identification number may have to [backup withhold](https://lopifi.com/md/glossary/backup-withholding) from your payouts, so give it a correct [W-9](https://lopifi.com/md/glossary/form-w-9) at onboarding. And receiving no form changes nothing: income is reported on the return whether or not a 1099-K shows it.

> “Don't contact the IRS. We can't correct your Form 1099-K.”
