Most overpayment is not a bad price. It is a renewal nobody saw coming. The work of cancelling well is mostly reading the term, finding the date, and doing things in the order the contract expects.

## Run your numbers

- [Cancel mid-term cost](https://lopifi.com/md/tools/early-cancel): Cancel an annual plan early: what is left unused, what you get back, and what cancelling really stops.

## Read the paper first

Everything else follows from five lines of the order form. If you cannot find it, ask the vendor's account contact for a copy in writing.

- The term: monthly, annual or multi-year, and the date it started.
- Renewal: automatic or manual, and the price on renewal.
- Notice: how many days before the end, to whom, and in what form (email, portal, letter).
- Termination: whether you can end early, and what happens to fees already paid.
- Data: whether you can export, in what formats, and for how long after the end.

## Do it in this order

The order matters because each step makes the next one safe.

1. **Calendar the notice date.** Put the notice deadline, not the renewal date, in a calendar with two reminders.
2. **Export.** Export everything the plan lets you export, and confirm the file opens.
3. **Run the replacement.** Get the replacement working and used for real work, with the old plan read-only.
4. **Give notice.** Send notice the way the contract says and keep the confirmation.
5. **Check the statement.** Watch the next statement. A charge after a confirmed cancellation is a dispute to raise with the vendor, in writing.

## What we will not do

We do not help anyone break a contract, dispute a valid charge, or pressure a vendor with a false claim. If a term makes leaving expensive, the right move is to plan the exit for the end of it. The savings are real either way; they start later.

## Common questions

### Does the subscription renew automatically?

Often, yes, and the charge arrives without a reminder. The order form or the plan page says whether it renews and how much notice you must give. Put the notice date in a calendar before you do anything else.

### Can we cancel in the middle of a term?

Check the contract. Some allow termination for convenience with notice, some do not, and some refund nothing. If you cannot tell, ask counsel before you stop paying; non-payment is not the same as termination.

### Do we lose our data when we cancel?

No. Export before you cancel, because access to the export tools can end with the plan. Keep the export until the replacement has been used for a full month.

## Keep going

- [Offboarding SaaS accounts](https://lopifi.com/md/savings/how-to/offboard-saas-accounts): Remove a leaver's seats, shared logins and SSO access in order, keep their data with an owner, and put the freed licenses to work or cancel them.
- [Annual vs monthly billing](https://lopifi.com/md/savings/how-to/annual-vs-monthly-software-billing): Annual plans cost the same cash up front but hit the books monthly. How a prepaid plan is booked, what it does to runway, and when monthly pays off.
