Difference diagnoser, worked

Showing a worked example — type over it

ISO 4217 code — sets the decimals: JPY 0, USD 2, KWD 3.

Result

Difference8,100.00
Sign reversed

4,050.00 is in the data. Posted on the wrong side, it moves the total by 8,100.00.

Look for: 4,050.00

Transposition

8,100.00 ÷ 9 = 900.00 — two adjacent digits swapped, differing by 9.

Decimal slide

A figure of 900.00 entered as 9,000.00 (or the reverse) leaves exactly this gap.

Look for: 900.00, 9,000.00

How the difference diagnoser works.

Difference diagnoser: Out by 8,100 → divisible by 9 → transposition, and difference ÷ 9 says how much the two swapped digits differ by. Also catches a line omitted or posted twice, a sign flip (half the gap is a figure in the data), a decimal slide (the "off by a factor of 10"), and per-line rounding.

Where these numbers come from.

Negatives are parenthesised because that is what a statement does. The rest is four promises.
