Creative Cloud is hired to put a set of design applications on a person's computer under one subscription. The saving usually comes from matching seats to the applications people actually use. Below: what to count first, the open-source option we verified, and how to move without stranding client files.
Design files travel. Clients, printers and freelancers send and expect files in the formats of the application they use, so a subscription ends up being the price of working with everyone else.
A bundle also hides waste. One person needs one application, the plan covers twenty, and no one revisits it because the monthly line is small. Counting seats against real use usually finds the first saving before any replacement is needed.
Only alternatives we have checked. An open-source project is listed with the license its repository reports, on the date shown; one whose license could not be read as a single standard id is not offered as open source. Read the license guide before running any of them.

Each feature below is what the product's own page or README says, linked to where we read it on the date shown. Pros and cons are limited to what those pages state and to what the path itself changes. We do not rank products on quality.
A bundle covers many jobs, and most teams use one or two of them. Start with a count of who uses what. The honest first saving is often not a replacement at all: it is moving people from the full bundle to the single application they use, if the vendor's plans allow it.
Krita is the open-source option we verified, listed under the GPL-3.0 license on the checked date. Its README describes it as a digital painting application, so it speaks to illustration and painting work, not to the whole bundle. We rate replacing the bundle moderate: the files and the habits of an agency or print workflow are the hard part, and the replacement has to be tested on real files.
Samples are made up and are not Adobe Creative Cloud's prices. Type in the figures from your own invoice or order form.
Paid seats against seats in use: what the idle ones cost a year, and what you save by right-sizing at renewal.
What paying a year up front really costs: the premium for monthly, the break-even month and the interest rate the discount works out to.
Arithmetic only, not tax, accounting or legal advice. Check the figures against your own order form.
Move by application and by person, not by product. The move is done when no one opens the old seats and the contract has ended.
List every seat, the person, and the applications they opened in the past quarter. Mark seats nobody has used.
For each remaining job, write down the file formats that come in from or go out to clients and printers. Those decide what a replacement must open and save.
Pick the replacement per job: a smaller plan, a different product, or the open-source option for painting work. Try it on real files from a finished project.
Move one person or team first, keep the old seat for a month, and compare outputs with the work that went out before.
Export working files and shared assets, wait a full month with no use of the old seats, and end the plan inside the notice window.
Run the vendor report for QuickBooks Online or Xero, then open the free audit.

“In use” is your call: last sign-in in the past 30 or 90 days from the vendor's admin report. A seat for someone on leave is not idle.

Paying 905.00 more on day one saves the other eleven monthly bills. The discount is worth that much a year on the cash you hand over early. If your cash earns or costs you less than this, annual wins, as long as you will use the tool all year.
| Months used | Monthly plan | Annual plan | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 95.00 | 1,000.00 | Monthly |
| 3 | 285.00 | 1,000.00 | Monthly |
| 6 | 570.00 | 1,000.00 | Monthly |
| 9 | 855.00 | 1,000.00 | Monthly |
| 12 | 1,140.00 | 1,000.00 | Annual |
Assumes the monthly plan bills at the start of each month and the annual plan does not refund. Check your order form for both.
