SPSS is hired to do statistical analysis on survey and research data, mostly through menus. Many of the procedures people run every day are shared by other tools, which makes it more replaceable than some platforms on this list. Below: the prices IBM prints, the one open-source option we verified, and how to confirm your results hold up before you cancel.
Researchers learn it in school and carry it to work. A reviewer, a journal or a client may expect to see its output, and a saved syntax file is institutional memory.
Add-on modules extend the base for specific methods, so one person's rare procedure can justify a subscription for the whole group. That is why we list the procedures actually run before we recommend any change.
Only alternatives we have checked. An open-source project is listed with the license its repository reports, on the date shown; one whose license could not be read as a single standard id is not offered as open source. Read the license guide before running any of them.

SPSS is hired to run statistical tests on research and survey data, mostly through menus. The methods most users run are common to many tools. The risk is in the long tail: a specialized procedure, saved syntax or a reviewer's expectations.
Start by listing the procedures people really run. If it is a short list of standard ones, a free tool may cover them. If someone relies on a niche module, that single module may decide the whole question.
Samples are made up and are not SPSS's prices. Type in the figures from your own invoice or order form.
The honest yearly cost of running open-source software yourself, set against the bill it replaces, with the seat count where it stops paying.
Paid seats against seats in use: what the idle ones cost a year, and what you save by right-sizing at renewal.
Arithmetic only, not tax, accounting or legal advice. Check the figures against your own order form.
The question is whether your analyses reproduce. In outline:
List the analyses run in the last year: the procedures, the datasets, who ran them and for whom. Mark the ones that must be reproducible later.
Pick two or three past analyses of different kinds. Run them in the candidate tool on the same data and compare tables and statistics line by line.
Note any procedure the candidate cannot run. If it is rare, decide whether a single seat for it is cheaper than keeping the whole subscription.
Move one team, keep the old subscription through a full reporting cycle, and write down differences in defaults that affected anything published.
Export datasets and results, then end the subscription inside the contract's notice window.
Run the vendor report for QuickBooks Online or Xero, then open the free audit.

“In use” is your call: last sign-in in the past 30 or 90 days from the vendor's admin report. A seat for someone on leave is not idle.
