AutoCAD is hired to do one job: produce and edit technical drawings that other people build from. That job is tied to file formats and industry habit, so replacing it is slower and riskier than replacing a file-sync tool. Below: how to decide what is really needed, the one open-source option we verified, and the order of steps that keeps client drawings safe.
Drawings travel. A client, an engineer or a permit office sends a file and expects one back in the same format. That outside expectation, more than any feature, is what keeps a drafting tool in place.
Inside the company the tool also holds years of templates, blocks and standards. None of that is in the contract, and all of it is what makes switching feel expensive. That is why we count users and test real files before recommending anything.
Only alternatives we have checked. An open-source project is listed with the license its repository reports, on the date shown; one whose license could not be read as a single standard id is not offered as open source. Read the license guide before running any of them.

Each feature below is what the product's own page or README says, linked to where we read it on the date shown. Pros and cons are limited to what those pages state and to what the path itself changes. We do not rank products on quality.
Drafting software is hired to produce drawings other people will build from. The risk in replacing it is rarely the software. It is the files that have to round-trip with someone else's version, and the years of templates and standards the drafters have set up.
Often the first saving is narrower than a replacement: find the seats nobody opened this year and end those, or move occasional viewers to a viewer. We rate this one hard because the format and the customers' expectations, not the price, decide what is possible.
Samples are made up and are not AutoCAD's prices. Type in the figures from your own invoice or order form.
Paid seats against seats in use: what the idle ones cost a year, and what you save by right-sizing at renewal.
What paying a year up front really costs: the premium for monthly, the break-even month and the interest rate the discount works out to.

Narrow first, replace second. In outline:
List each seat, the person using it, the last time it was opened and the kind of work done. Seats with no use in the last year are a saving that needs no replacement.
Collect a handful of representative drawings: a simple one, a large one with references, and one a client sent. Open and export each in the candidate tool and compare against the original.
Move occasional users to viewing and printing only where that meets their need, and keep full drafting seats for the people who need them.
If a replacement is viable for a team, run one live project in it alongside the old tool. Agree with the client or authority first on which file format they will accept.
Archive every drawing in the formats you were asked to keep, wait for a full project cycle, then end seats inside the contract's notice window.

Send us the export and see which lines are worth a second look. A connected version is planned. AutoCAD is one of the lines worth a look.

“In use” is your call: last sign-in in the past 30 or 90 days from the vendor's admin report. A seat for someone on leave is not idle.

Paying 905.00 more on day one saves the other eleven monthly bills. The discount is worth that much a year on the cash you hand over early. If your cash earns or costs you less than this, annual wins, as long as you will use the tool all year.
| Months used | Monthly plan | Annual plan | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 95.00 | 1,000.00 | Monthly |
| 3 | 285.00 | 1,000.00 | Monthly |
| 6 | 570.00 | 1,000.00 | Monthly |
| 9 | 855.00 | 1,000.00 | Monthly |
| 12 | 1,140.00 | 1,000.00 | Annual |
Assumes the monthly plan bills at the start of each month and the annual plan does not refund. Check your order form for both.
