What it means
Cursor is a code editor with AI built in. No money moves through it, so apart from the subscription it never shows up in the ledger. It matters because it's how many founders write the scripts and dashboards that sit on top of their books.
Reading is low risk. A script that turns exported ledger reports into a burn chart or a cohort table can be wrong, but it can't change the books, and you can check it against the source.
Writing is a different job. An entry posted to QuickBooks Online or Xero has to balance, respect a closed period and carry a reason. A mistake gets corrected with a reversal, never an edit. A script written in an afternoon rarely does any of that, and the damage shows up months later as numbers nobody can explain.
Refresh dashboards only after the month is closed, from the closed figures. Then compare each total to the same line on the ledger's P&L. If they disagree, the dashboard is wrong, and the fix is to take its figures from the ledger rather than calculate them a second way.
Burn rate and runway are the figures founders most often build dashboards for. Reversals explain how a posted mistake gets fixed. GitHub is where those scripts usually end up.
Why it matters. AI is good at reading books: dashboards, analysis, forecasts. Writing to a ledger is different. Entries have to balance, closed months stay closed and mistakes get reversed, and investors rely on those rules.
Cursor isn't a ledger, and we don't connect to it. We work only in QuickBooks Online and Xero. This page covers how Cursor shows up in the books kept there.
Common questions
Can I write my own scripts to do my bookkeeping?
Reading and reporting are safe to automate. Posting to the ledger needs balanced entries, locked periods and an audit trail, and a quick script rarely enforces any of them.
Is it safe to build a finance dashboard on my books?
Yes, if it reads from reconciled, closed books and takes its figures from the ledger instead of recalculating them.
Should a script use my login to reach the ledger?
Give it its own connection with the narrowest access that does the job, read-only for a dashboard. Then the audit trail shows which changes came from the script, and you can revoke it without locking out a person.
