Algolia is hired to give a website or app fast search: type, get ranked results. The bill grows with search requests and records, which makes it worth reviewing. Replacing it means running search yourself, which is real engineering. Below are the published plans, the open-source option, and a plan to move without breaking results.
Search is wired into the product the day it ships, in the front-end code and in the way the data is indexed. Nobody has to maintain servers, so nobody questions it, until usage grows and the bill moves.
The value to the team is time not spent running a search engine. Moving off it hands that time back to you, so the saving only exists if the replacement is cheaper after counting the engineer hours.
That is why we start with usage: if much of the bill is requests nobody needs, trimming them can save more than switching.
Only alternatives we have checked. An open-source project is listed with the license its repository reports, on the date shown; one whose license could not be read as a single standard id is not offered as open source. Read the license guide before running any of them.

Each feature below is what the product's own page or README says, linked to where we read it on the date shown. Pros and cons are limited to what those pages state and to what the path itself changes. We do not rank products on quality.

List prices as printed on Algolia's pricing page on the checked date, in US dollars and excluding tax. They may differ at checkout. The page was inconsistent about the record allowance on the free tier, so it is not stated here. Enterprise-style plans are custom priced.
Hosted search is a feature of your product, not a back-office tool, so a change is visible to customers. The first question is how much of the service you actually use, because most sites rely on a small slice: type a few letters, get ranked results, filter by a field.
Typesense, the open-source option here, is published under the GPL-3.0 license according to its repository on the checked date. It is software you run, so you take on the servers, the upgrades and the backups. That is why we rate this hard: search is on the critical path of your own site.
Samples are made up and are not Algolia's prices. Type in the figures from your own invoice or order form.
The honest yearly cost of running open-source software yourself, set against the bill it replaces, with the seat count where it stops paying.
Paid seats against seats in use: what the idle ones cost a year, and what you save by right-sizing at renewal.
Arithmetic only, not tax, accounting or legal advice. Check the figures against your own order form.
Search is part of your product, so move it in stages and keep a fast way back. In outline:
Count records and monthly search requests, and list the fields searched, filtered and displayed. Export the synonyms, ranking rules and settings.
Decide who runs the new engine, where it lives, how it is backed up and what happens if it is down. Decide whether a short search outage is acceptable.
Load the records from your own database into the new engine and compare the record count with the source.
Run your twenty most common real queries against both and compare top results side by side. Record the differences and decide which matter.
Update the front-end code that calls search, behind a switch that can send traffic to either engine.
Send a small share of traffic to the new engine, watch errors and response times, then raise the share in steps.
Keep the old account running for a full month, export settings and any data you need, and end the plan inside the contract's notice window.
Run the vendor report for QuickBooks Online or Xero, then open the free audit.

Send us the export and see which lines are worth a second look. A connected version is planned. Algolia is one of the lines worth a look.

“In use” is your call: last sign-in in the past 30 or 90 days from the vendor's admin report. A seat for someone on leave is not idle.
