DocuSign is hired to collect signatures on documents and keep a record that they were signed. The collecting part is portable; the record is where care is needed. Below: the published plans, an open-source option we verified, and what to settle with counsel and your contract before changing anything.
Counterparties know it, so sending an envelope feels safe. Templates, reminders and a record of every signed document accumulate over years, and the record is the part nobody wants to lose.
Moving signatures is not mainly a software decision. Which documents can be signed which way depends on the documents and on counsel's view, so the cost saving is gated by a legal check that many teams skip until a dispute.
Seats and envelope limits also matter. A plan sized for a busy year keeps billing in a quiet one, and annual terms renew automatically unless the contract says otherwise.
Only alternatives we have checked. An open-source project is listed with the license its repository reports, on the date shown; one whose license could not be read as a single standard id is not offered as open source. Read the license guide before running any of them.

Each feature below is what the product's own page or README says, linked to where we read it on the date shown. Pros and cons are limited to what those pages state and to what the path itself changes. We do not rank products on quality.

E-signature is two jobs: collecting signatures and keeping the evidence that they happened. Cheaper tools do the first; what matters in a dispute is the second. Be clear which one you are buying.
The legal weight of a signed document depends on the signature process and on the documents' own rules, not on which product collected the signature. Check with counsel before changing how contracts are signed, and do not switch for document types where counsel says the process must stay as it is.
Documenso is the open-source option we verified, licensed AGPL-3.0. Running it means a server, backups and security updates, and the AGPL's network-use obligations apply if you modify it. Adobe's PDF suite also bundles signing; see Adobe Acrobat if that is already on your books.
Samples are made up and are not DocuSign's prices. Type in the figures from your own invoice or order form.
The honest yearly cost of running open-source software yourself, set against the bill it replaces, with the seat count where it stops paying.
Paid seats against seats in use: what the idle ones cost a year, and what you save by right-sizing at renewal.
Arithmetic only, not tax, accounting or legal advice. Check the figures against your own order form.
Move the habit last and the evidence first. In outline:
Count envelopes sent in the past 12 months, by document type and by sender. List every template and every integration that sends envelopes automatically.
Talk to counsel about which document types may move and how the new process must record who signed. Write the answer down per document type.
Export completed envelopes and certificates. Compare the number exported with the number in the account, and open a sample to check the certificate is attached.
Store the archive where your retention rules require, with access limited to the people who need it. Note the retention period per type.
Rebuild the two or three templates that account for most of your sends in the new tool. Send test documents to yourself and a colleague and check the signed copy and the record it keeps.
Pilot with one document type that counsel cleared, for one month. Finish or re-issue any envelope still pending in the old account.
Move the remaining cleared types, keep the old plan through a full cycle, then end it inside the contract's notice window.
Run the vendor report for QuickBooks Online or Xero, then open the free audit.

“In use” is your call: last sign-in in the past 30 or 90 days from the vendor's admin report. A seat for someone on leave is not idle.
