New Relic is hired to watch applications, servers and logs, and to alert people when something breaks. The bill follows data ingested and user seats, so the first lever is usually how much is sent. Below: the published plans, the open-source pieces that cover parts of the job, and the work of moving alerts safely.
Monitoring is the tool nobody wants to be without when something breaks. Agents sit in every service and alerts page the on-call person, so removing it feels like removing a safety net.
That is a fair reason to be careful, and a reason to plan the move around the alerts. It is also why the first saving is usually in what is sent, not in who receives it.
Only alternatives we have checked. An open-source project is listed with the license its repository reports, on the date shown; one whose license could not be read as a single standard id is not offered as open source. Read the license guide before running any of them.

Monitoring is the job of noticing that something broke and finding out why. The product bundles several tools; most teams use some of them heavily and the rest not at all.
Replacing it is an engineering project. The aim is not to match a feature list but to keep the alerts and the dashboards the on-call person really uses, and to know who fixes the monitoring when it fails.
Samples are made up and are not New Relic's prices. Type in the figures from your own invoice or order form.
The honest yearly cost of running open-source software yourself, set against the bill it replaces, with the seat count where it stops paying.
Paid seats against seats in use: what the idle ones cost a year, and what you save by right-sizing at renewal.
Arithmetic only, not tax, accounting or legal advice. Check the figures against your own order form.
In outline:
List the applications and hosts reporting, the dashboards and alerts people use, and the on-call rules. Retire what nobody reads.
Stand up the replacement for one service. Instrument it, rebuild its alerts and trigger a test failure to confirm the right person is paged.
Run both for a full on-call cycle. Compare what each saw for real incidents before trusting the new one.
Remove the old agents, export what you need to keep, and end the plan inside the contract's notice window.
Run the vendor report for QuickBooks Online or Xero, then open the free audit.

“In use” is your call: last sign-in in the past 30 or 90 days from the vendor's admin report. A seat for someone on leave is not idle.
