Intercom is hired to talk to customers: a messenger inside your product, a shared inbox, a help center, and an AI agent. If the team mostly uses the inbox, a help desk covers it. If the messenger and proactive messages carry weight, the move is a project. Below: published prices, verified open-source help desks, and the steps for leaving.
It sits between the company and its customers, on the website and inside the product. Moving it means customers see a change, so it is postponed.
Usage-based pieces can make the bill drift upward without a decision. The first step is to see which pieces are used and which are only paid for.
Only alternatives we have checked. An open-source project is listed with the license its repository reports, on the date shown; one whose license could not be read as a single standard id is not offered as open source. Read the license guide before running any of them.

Intercom bundles several jobs: a messenger on your product, a shared inbox, a help center and an AI agent billed by outcome. A help desk covers the inbox. The messenger and the proactive messages are the parts to look at honestly before deciding.
Samples are made up and are not Intercom's prices. Type in the figures from your own invoice or order form.
The honest yearly cost of running open-source software yourself, set against the bill it replaces, with the seat count where it stops paying.
Paid seats against seats in use: what the idle ones cost a year, and what you save by right-sizing at renewal.
Arithmetic only, not tax, accounting or legal advice. Check the figures against your own order form.
In outline:
List the channels in use, the number of agents, where the messenger is installed, and which help center articles get read.
Run the replacement beside Intercom for one channel, usually email, and have a small group answer real conversations in it.
Export conversations and help center articles. Customer data is personal data: keep the export where access is controlled and follow your retention rules.
Point email forwarding and the website widget at the new tool, and tell customers if the support address changes.
Keep the old account for a month for reference, then end the plan inside the contract's notice window.
Run the vendor report for QuickBooks Online or Xero, then open the free audit.

Send us the export and see which lines are worth a second look. A connected version is planned. Intercom is one of the lines worth a look.

“In use” is your call: last sign-in in the past 30 or 90 days from the vendor's admin report. A seat for someone on leave is not idle.
